Louis Morris Murphy, Jr. (born May 11, 1987) is an American professional football player who is a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Murphy played college football for the University of Florida , and now plays professionally for the Oakland Raiders of the NFL.
Early life
Murphy was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1987. He earned the honor of being an Eagle Scout . Murphy attended Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, where he played for the Lakewood Spartans high school football team and was a highly recruited wide receiver. He was ranked as the 37th best wide receiver by Rivals.com in 2005. He chose to go to Florida over other top Division 1 Schools
College career
Murphy received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida , where he played wide receiver for coach Urban Meyer 's Florida Gators football team from 2005 to 2008 .
2005 Season
In Murphy's Freshman year, 2005, he mostly played on Special teams .
2006 Season
Murphy, like his freshman year, didn't play much his sophomore year . However, he did get his first touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Tim Tebow against the LSU Tigers .
2007 Season
He earned a spot on the starting roster during the Spring. He became one of the top receivers on the team. After the end of the regular season, he had 36 catches for 544 yards. He also caught 5 touchdown passes, and had 1 rushing attempt for 12 yards.
2008 Season
Louis Murphy led the team in receiving yards (655) and ranked second in receptions (38) and average receiving yards per game (46.8). He averaged 17.2 yards per catch, fourth in the SEC. He surpassed the 1,000 career-receiving yards mark with 54 yards in the victory over South Carolina. He extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 27 and scored his final college TD on a 20-yard pass in the first quarter in the Gators BCS National Championship Game win. Murphy had knee surgery following the season. Murphy graduated from Florida with a bachelor's degree in 2008.
NFL
Murphy was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders . He made his NFL debut on Monday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers on September 14, 2009. Murphy caught a 56 yard touchdown pass from JaMarcus Russell . In the 2009 season Murphy caught a touchdown pass that helped his team beat the Cincinnati Bengals . Murphy again led his team to a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers by grabbing an 11-yard touchdown pass from Bruce Gradkowski with 9 seconds left in the game that put the Raiders up 27-24.
